Digital D&T in Electronic Products and Product Design

This two day course/workshop aims to explore the scenarios provided by the exam boards for the new controlled assessments and generate teaching materials and ideas that can be taken back into school.  By taking advantage of the changes to coursework, we hope to move teachers on from their more traditional projects and to encourage them to better integrate electronics and enclosure design using CAD/CAM.  The course is offered at Finham Park School and at Staffordshire STEM centre.  This is a hands-on course that involves delegates tackling a 'coursework' project of the type that they might set their students - but without the controlled element!

Working in small groups, delegates will identify the required electronic sub-circuits most useful in the scenarios and explore how they work using circuit simulation.  They will also model/explore PIC based implementations of the circuits using picXplorer, Genie or PICAXE. Each group will select a scenario to develop the design for an electronic product working on both the PCB and enclosure design hand-in-hand using a range of CAD to integrate the process. e.g. transferring files between PCB design and 2D/3D CAD software.  Designed products will be manufactured using the full range of available CAM facilities at the centre.

Groups will be able to split designing and making tasks among themselves but will need good communication to ensure that the electronics fit the enclosure.

It is hoped that by the end of the course there will be a range of projects that can be shared and used as exemplar material for students. Some resources will be made available free of charge to schools so that aspects of the project can be trailed with pupils.

The event aims to:

Develop subject knowledge in the areas of computer aided design, computer aided manufacture and electronics including the use of PIC microcontrollers.
Develop teacher's pedagogic knowledge and approaches to controlled assessment.
Use modern design and manufacturing technologies to develop a holistic approach to designing and making.
Develop teaching materials to support controlled assessed coursework.

The event is offered at two centres: Finham Park School and Staffordshire STEM Centre. Each centre will host two teachers (with in interest in CAD/CAM and or electronics) and a technician from six schools.

Instead of a technician, the third person could be a support assistant or other interested person such a as a Science or Engineering Ambassador who undertakes support work in school. Where a school cannot furnish two teachers, schools will be paired up to develop their product.
