'Flat' battery torch

In many ways, the 'flat' battery torch is rather a curiosity. It uses a simple switch mode power supply to extract energy from batteries that are otherwise regarded as expended. The torch's white LED gives good illumination even when the battery voltage falls below 1V. This is a great, low cost project for introducing sustainable electronics.
This is a practical hands-on session to explore the use of LEDs in lighting and construct a 'flat' battery torch.
